There are many ways to treat inflammation internally, and externally, but few are as effective as a changed diet and supplement regimen. Many people know this but aren’t sure where to begin. Looking through a natural food store vitamin aisle can be totally mind-boggling, leaving one with question marks floating around their mind as they proceed through the check-out lane.

At Nutragen, we believe in educating people to encourage improved health for all, and that all starts with a conversation about what we put inside our bodies.

Ingredients in our foods matter. Ingredients in our supplements really matter. And ingredients that fight inflammation matter even more.

As we learned over the last few weeks, inflammation can be one of the biggest aggressors to the human body and must be treated as quickly, and as thoroughly, as possible.

This week, we want to share three ingredients that we not only believe in, we take them ourselves (see the bottom of this post to find out how).

earn how these three ingredients can help you fight inflammation, improve your overall health, and possibly extend your lifetime.

TURMERIC

Turmeric, a member of the ginger plant family, is most commonly found in Asian and Indian foods. You’ve probably tasted it in a curry dish at some point in your life and can recall its distinct flavor. It contains a yellow-colored chemical called curcumin, which is often used to color foods and cosmetics. The ingredient itself holds very powerful anti-inflammatory properties, making it a wonderful addition to any meal or diet plan.

It is common knowledge that Turmeric is used for arthritis, heartburn, joint and stomach pain, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, bypass surgery, hemorrhage, diarrhea, intestinal gas, stomach bloating, loss of appetite, jaundice, liver problems, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gallbladder disorders, high cholesterol, a skin condition called lichen planus, skin inflammation from radiation treatment, and fatigue.

This powerful ingredient may also be useful for headaches, bronchitis, colds, lung infections, hay fever, fibromyalgia, leprosy, fever, menstrual problems, itchy skin, recovery after surgery, and even some forms of cancer. It can also be applied topically for inflammatory skin conditions.

Its uses are seemingly endless, so why wouldn’t you be taking it?

BOSWELLIA

Boswellia, also known as Indian frankincense, is an herbal extract taken from the Boswellia serrata tree. It’s been used as an incense for centuries, but it’s other uses are still being discovered by the masses.

Boswellia is a wonderful anti-inflammatory agent and can be an effective painkiller, while possibly preventing the loss of cartilage. Some studies have found that it may even be useful in treating certain cancers, such as leukemia and breast cancer.

Some research shows that boswellic acid can prevent the formation of leukotrienes in the body, which are molecules that have been identified as a cause of inflammation.  Studies show that boswellia could help treat the following conditions : 1) osteoarthritis, 2) rheumatoid arthritis, 3) asthma, 4) inflammatory bowel disease.

GINGER

Ginger originally comes from the warmer climate countries of Asia, like Japan and China, but can now be found being used by the masses all around the world. It’s powerful anti-inflammatory properties make it an effective add-on ingredient to any health and wellness plan. It has an easily likeable taste, as well, so it’s a great ingredient to have in the kitchen for tea, soup, etc.

Ginger contains chemicals that can reduce nausea and inflammation. Researchers believe the chemicals in the plant work primarily in the stomach and intestines, and there are certain studies that show effects in the brain and nervous system to control nausea.

Ginger is commonly used for various types of “stomach problems,” including motion sickness, morning sickness, colic, upset stomach, gas, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), nausea, as well as loss of appetite.

You’ve probably seen ginger tea at the grocery store but picked up the classic green tea instead. Next time, think about adding ginger to your green tea to pack an extra anti-inflammatory punch. You’ll thank us later.

While each of these three ingredients is powerful on their own, you can probably imagine the strength of combining them into one.
